The Mark Of True Greatness

Perhaps this is the mark of a truly great Nightclub/cabaret act? Certainly, there are fun, outrageous moments that are entertainment driven; toe-tapping moments that make us feel good about the day, the week, maybe even the last year or two. But then there are other moments that require us, the audience, to dig deep. These moments hit us in unexpected ways, when an artist turns a lyric on it’s ear and we hear it as if for the first time.

Like A Broadway Opening

The main room at Birdland was like a Broadway opening in an MGM musical Sunday night. With a long line reaching down 43rd street, the entire club was abuzz with people excited to see The Showbroads. Every seat was filled, including those at the bar, and where a spare square of floor space could be found, a person willing to stand for the show could also be found. Peering into the darkness of the room, mere minutes before the show started, one could see the likes of Robin Westle, Mark Nadler, Bryon Sommers, Nancy McGraw, Eugene Ebner, Richard Skipper, Michael Kirk Lane, Kenny Bell, Russ Wooley, and KT Sullivan. Everyone wanted to see The Showbroads debut.

Bawdy Brassy Bravura

The house was packed at Birdland on November 17, for the nightclub duel, the audience primed and ready and there wasn’t a disappointing moment, the song choices showing off the assets with boas galore, brawn and bawdy brassy bravura.
